How Does This Work?

Being on a spiritual path can be a very joyful journey! But like any journey, it may also be filled with some challenges that ultimately are necessary for growth.

The truth is that the work is an organic process that we develop together. And sometimes, God works in mysterious ways! I certainly can’t claim to understand or be able to explain it all but here’s the basic outline of what we do together:

People come with a specific goal. For example, it might be, “I want to feel a stronger connection to God” or it might be “I know I struggle with compassion and I’d like to be more loving,” or “I’ve lost faith,” “I can’t forgive certain people,” or “I want to be more present and centered.”

We discuss the situation and a customized plan is created. Listening to what your heart wants and needs is essential in every step of the work. Once we have clarity on what you are asking for and need, we create a plan which might include meditations, guided exercises, chanting, breathing, or work on limiting beliefs. We also focus on what spiritual qualities need the most support in your life.

Some of the Spiritual Qualities that I assist people in developing are:

Acceptance

Hope

Faith

Courage

Integrity

Honesty

Forgiveness

Love & compassionate

Being present and centered

Connection

Self-responsibility

Service

Perseverance

We do sessions together and homework is provided to start bringing the practices and the spiritual qualities to work in life. The sessions might involve more meditations, chanting, body scans, questions to bring to your heart, and listening practices to hear what your heart and the Divine are telling you is needed.

The results are resolution of issues, integration of divine qualities, changes in your life. Spiritual work is a continuous process but along the way our connection to the Divine deepens, we grow wiser about who we are and what we need to be authentically ourselves, and we deepen the spiritual qualities in our hearts so we can live them more fully day to day. As this happens, there is more light and love and joy in our hearts. Life changes within ourselves and we see the world differently and so we respond differently.

How Did I End Up Doing This Work?

As a teenager exploring spiritual teachings from a variety of systems, I kept thinking “These spiritual principles and ideas sound great! But how can I live them?”

Meditating daily created some peace in me but once I was off the mat in my day to day life, I couldn’t stay connected to that state. I wasn’t able to develop more trust or faith in accepting what is. Ideas like “surrender” felt scary and inaccessible. I didn’t feel more patient or forgiving in my relationships. I still had a lot of resistance and suffering that I wanted to release but I couldn’t figure out how.

After decades of searching, I collected tools and practices from a variety of systems that have helped me to live these spiritual principles and be authentically myself, more connected to God, and better able to handle whatever life throws my life.

Sufism, which is the seeking of direct personal experience with the Divine, has figured prominently in my spiritual life for several years but other systems have influenced me as well. Chinese medicine philosophy which is influenced by Taoism and Confusionism, Tibetan Buddhism (New Kadampa tradition) which I practiced for many years, and yogic practices all shaped my spiritual world view. Also, modern teachers such as Dr. David Hawkins, MD, Thich Nat Han, Ekhart Tolle, Michael Singer and many others have contributed to my spiritual evolution.

Your spiritual path and process will be uniquely yours. There’s zero requirement to follow any particular religious system in order to work together.

My role is to share what I’ve learned, provide a mirror for you, hold space and support you in such a way that you can take the tools that work to improve your life and leave the rest.

Health & Wellness and the Role of Spirituality

I can’t tell you that doing spiritual practices will “heal” you of any health issue you might have.

What I can say is that developing spiritual principles and having a spiritual practice are incredible qualities to have to handle any challenge that comes your way, including health challenges. It can bring immense joy, love, lightness, connection, and insight into your life!

Spiritual qualities such as faith, hope, resilience, and patience help people to navigate their health issues with more success and help them to have more peace through the process. Western medicine agrees that stress is a major component to many modern day health issues. The development of these qualities will help to minimize emotional and physical stress on the body. And, there is some research that prayer and chanting have a positive impact on people’s healing.

My Masters in Divinity program and training has been focused on how spiritual practices can improve health. In the hundreds of hours of sessions I offered guiding people using spiritual healing tools, I consistently saw people increase their connection to their own heart and to the Divine. This often lead to new self awareness and after that an improvement in their wellbeing often followed.
